Define Asian |
|
|
The first thing that comes to mind is the definition of Asian. Does that mean someone who "looks Asian" or "sounds Asian" or who is "born Asian" or who is 50.1% Asian or what? I had a great experience a while back when my son and I went to have a meal in "ChinaTown" after a jays game. There was no English spoken or written in the restaurant as far as I could tell but the place was jammed and we were enjoying a great meal. By the way, my son is 6'3'' blond hair, blue eyed and I'm the same with a little gray and a little more weight. We were thinking that we were really out of our element until we struck up a casual conversation with two "Asian looking" ladies at the next table. They were both 2nd generation Canadians who knew no more Asian language or culture than we did. They confessed that they just dressed the part when they came to ChinaTown and they were "tourists from Mississauga" just like us. That made me think that just because people in Toronto "look Asian" they may be just as Canadian as me when it comes to generations in Canada. So.........................................what do we mean by "Asian"?

It would be same defining visible minority. Post the reform of Canada's immigration laws in the 1960s, visible minorities are defined as "persons, other than Aboriginals, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour." Then, under the visible minorities, the person's race (such as East Indian, Russin, Asian, etc...) would be used to subdefining the ethnicity (or racial background.) In other words, most of visible minorities who live in Canada are Canadian as a nationality (if they have a citizenship) with distintive racial background.
btw, I am not sure why I am explainig this on the Escrot forum...

The truth is, the only way for a non-Oriental to tell the difference between a real Chinese and a real Japanese person is to be familiar with the sound of their respective languages. You can tell when the start to talk, but it is really hard to tell just by looking at them, unless you are Japanese or Chinese yourself and have a trained eye for it.

When we say Asian it is simply how the girl looks because thats what it is all about. It is a general term including thet many pan-asian countries of the world. Maybe some would like to have some sort of "authentic" experience with a girl from a particular country but for most of us white guys its just about the girl being nonwhite. Same with a girl being black..could be African could be east Indian too.
